Driver CPC to be or not to be - that is the question!
I've been doing some research. Yes, I know that will come as a shock to many out there, but I have!
I've been working on out Driver CPC review and looking at what people think about the mandated learning for most commercial drivers. It's been interesting!
I've talked to drivers, talked to owners of smaller companies in my area, emailed a few people for their thoughts and done lots of reading of blogs, websites and discussion articles.
I've come to a conclusion:
1. There are a lot of drivers out there that are either ignoring Driver CPC requirements; or reckon it will go away.
Comment: I will have to wait with everyone else to see if I am proven wrong but I'm sorry folks, as it is written into European legislation as well as GB legislation, I don't think it will go away any more or any faster than any other legal requirement.
Those who ignore it do so at their peril - if you finish up not able to work maybe that is a risk you don't want to chance?
2. Oh the scepticism - making money for the government, waste of time, 'I'm already professional!' and 'so why should I bother?'
Comment: Well OK - maybe there is money being made or taken - by taining providers; JAUPT; DSA; Government in general and so on; and in most cases probably with good cause - most of us want to be paid for our work so charging generally works out the way it is done. But really - if this was JUST a British plot I'd understand more - but it isn't! It is EU wide. OK in some areas the DCPC if paid for by the government - but in other areas it isn't and it is harder and more prescriptive.
But isn't the point the attitude of the industry and the peception of the public? Driver CPC is basd on the premise of safety and professionalism, and will help not only provide efficiencies in companies in a difficult time (if done well) but will also help improve public perception and everyones safety. Are you mostly saying that Driver CPC learning is a waste of time? Well shame on you if you are.
It has to be done - so why is everyone not using it to make their business or profession better?? Learning is as much a state of mind as a task - and it can be enjoyable! Those drivers truly taking a pride in what they do regardless of how long they have done it, recognise the fact that they may still have something to learn - bad habits creep in, technology throws some people out, others struggle with international driving issues, others with maintenance of vehicles and so on ad infinitum. I defy anyone to show me a driver who has NOTHING else to learn!!
As for businesses - are you all on target for cost savings? In the current economic environment I would expect everyone to be assessing how they can save money or do more for their money! SO where do your issues lie - tacho infringements? - Fuel usage? - High maintenance bills? - Contract development? Where are the problems? Now once you have found that out - get hold of a reputatable training provider - or me - and find out what they can do to save you money equivalent to what you are spending on Drvier CPC!!
If the provider cannot answer your questions they are not good enough - don't waste your money!!

See you later.....
